De film van Peter Jackson is de tweede van drie films gebaseerd op het boek The Hobbit, van J.R.R. Tolkien. In dit verhaal vervolgen we de avonturen van het titelpersonage Bilbo Balings (Martin Freeman) tijdens zijn epische expeditie naar het verloren dwergenrijk Erebor. Hij wordt vergezeld door de tovenaar Gandalf de Grijze (Ian McKellen) en dertien dwergen, onder leiding van de legendarische krijger Thorin Eikenschild (Richard Armitage). The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug zal vanaf 11 december 2013 in de Nederlandse bioscopen te zien zijn.
